Elvis Presley's 78's around the world

André Helling

Self-published, € 45,-

This project started back in 1997. Many Elvis-Presley-Discographies were present, even on his 78 RPM's, but there was no comprehensive work that put all of those highly breakable records worldwide together.

This challenge was André Helling's job and after many years of research he put together 1428 Elvis Presley 78's in his book. And that's not all, many of them are also color-pictured, also shown are picture- and companysleeves. The Japanese 78's additional included a songsheet with a photo of Elvis, also shown in this book.

While Germany stopped the 78 RPM production back in 1957, USA continued one further year, in England until 1960, Brazil produced those high-speed records up to 1962, in India it went on until 1966; caused by English pressing stations brought to India and many small towns that had no electricity that time.

The biggest output was on the Phillipines, where - beneath RCA - there were pressed Elvis 78's on Electro-Voice, Empire, Harmony, Lancer and the Hot-Shot label. Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Colombia and Brazil pressed lots of 78's. But why looking as far away: who else knew that Finland made 2, Norway 20, the Netherlands 1 and even 1 in the Sovjet Union? André also shows many label variations in his book.

There is one more chapter regarding worldwide acetates. Here are fortunately the first pressings on the Memphis Recording Services label listed, the very first recordings, Elvis made for his Mum in 706 Union Ave. Two more chapters are showing the tribute and novelty records and low-budget coverversions - listed and even pictured - on 78 RPM.

A really great book (A4-sized, ring-bound), only possible through worldwide contacts and many hours of work. All comments and descriptions are in English language as this book is international interesting To be ordered at:

André Helling, Freiligrathstr. 274, 26386 Wilhelmshaven, Germany or via email under info@elvis-on-78.de.

Some of the rarest 78s in all the world

What makes record collecting such fun is the diverse nature of the addicition. In this digital age Elvis Presley's music may be feverishly downloaded, but his original 50s recordings were waxed when 78rpm records were selling and are still sought by devoted collectors. German Elvis fan André Helling not only slavishly acquires original King 78s but, in this labour of love, sets out to catalogue over 1000 different Presley shellacs released around the world.

Spread over 46 large A4 colour pages are 50s Blue suede shoes and Hound dogs ranging from Pakistan, Brazil, Chile, India, Norway, Finland, Holland, Japan, America, Argentina and the Philippines. It's fascinating to see that, because of their small runs, Irish 78s pressed in the Emerald Isle are some of the most rare and collectable. This slim tome is chock-full of pictures of records, labels, test pressings, demos and picture sleeves. It's eye candy for the Presley obsessive and a delight for 78 collectors. The only thing that lets this self-published book down is that there are no prices. Helling should address this in his next edition and, in doing so, make Presley's 78s a really essential tool for Elvis collectors.

Irish Elvis Pressing!

As an English record collector based in Ireland, I throw down the gauntled to you. I recently acquired two rare Elvis 78s from an ad in the Irish Midlands. The first is I want you, I need you, I love you / My Baby left me. The label is red HMV IP 1125 with silver lettering and 'pressed in Ireland' in very small print below the titles. The second record is All shook up / That's when your heartaches begin. The label is black RCA Victor 20-6870 (H2WB-0260) with silver lettering including the HMV Nipper Dog trade mark. It has 'Made i Canada by RCA Victor Company Ltd Montreal' in very small print around the lower edge of the label. Collector shops in Dublin have told me the HMV Irish pressings are among the rarest in the world due to being produced in a small country from a record plant in Dublin's northside. The Canadian RCA record I know absolutely nothing about. What's the story?

You call this a challenge? When Elvis started releasing singles the 78 rather than the 45 RPM was king and his records were pressed and issued ina wide range of countries. Your Canadian 78 is one of the more common ones, although still worth a respectable £ 40. However, as the pressing runs were small and many have been damaged and destroyed over time, Irish 78s are rare and highly sought after by collectors. We estimate that yours - in near Mint condition - is worth between £ 300 - £ 500 and even more to the right buyer.

The Bible on this subject is Elvis Presley's 78's around the world by André Helling, which is a treasure trove of information and color photos giving details of not only America, England and Irish pressings but releases from places as far afield as Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, India and Japan (www.elvis-on-78.de)

Elvis Presley's 78's around the world

by André Helling (published by himself)

People collect anything about Elvis: records, books, memorabilia, etc, but 78 RPM records are little sought after and their collecting is only made by a few enthusiasts willing to pay even considerable amounts for an item that will be never be used and has not even an attractive 'package' to admire. Nevertheless, the old and fragile 78 RPM, harder and harder to find just due to it being so prone to break, must however have a particular appeal for this author that has dedicated an in-depth, worldwide study to it! Thanks to a chain of correspondents scattered everywhere, the author has realized this amateur booklet, written in English, about 50 A4 computer printed pages, where he lists the 78 RPM discographies of 24 countries of all continents. Of particular interest is the sector where each country labels are reproduced in colors, with possible variations. For example, for Philippines, 31 different labels are shown. Besides reproduction of different versions of the classic neutral holed covers that were then generally used, it's interesting to note that some countries, really just a few, had realized certain photographic covers for some issues, either specific for Elvis, or with the advertising of their artists, among whom Elvis was featured.

As far as photographs are concerned, for lack of information, I am not able to judge the foreign ones, but I can verify the Italian ones.

Between may 1956 and may 1958 (and not in 1957-1958 as the author states), Italian RCA published eighteen Elvis 78 RPM records. For them, apart from minimal variations in graphics or the 'BIEM' logo, four different labels were used: black with RCA logo in a big circle, black with RCA logo in a small circle, black with RCA Italian writing in half a circle, blue with RCA Italian writing in half a circle, the latter been used almost exclusively in the second half of 1957.

The author rightly points out these four different variations, but then in the discography, he lists the publication of 17 records with the first version, 17 for the second, 18 for the third and 18 for the fourth. This does not seem to make sense because I don't believe that 'all' the records were edited or re-edited for any kind of labels. According to what has been found until nowadays, it is likely that all the records appeared with the 'black label with small circle' version, but for the other versions, publication must have been random, depending on the needs at the moment. There were some very popular records that needed one or more reprints, realized with the logo in use at that moment, but other records were maybe edited once and then removed from the catalogue. By seeing some Italian names listed in the 'thanks to' section, I guess that they have been the source of the strange informations reported that I would like to study in depth.

Despite this, it is however a truly particular publication and those who are interested in getting it can ask the author: André Helling, Freiligrathstr. 274, 26386 Wilhelmshaven (Germany), E-mail: info@elvis-on-78.de

Elvis Presley's 78's around the world

André Helling

André Helling has published a very nice book about Elvis 78 RPMs. The book is 50 pages. It contains information of nearly 900 different Elvis 78's issued in 24 countries.

Some of the biggest surprises in this book for me was to see all the covers that were produced around the world for the 78's. There are some very nice ones in between. You can also see many labels from countries like USA, Great Britain and Germany and probably most interesting from countries like Japan, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, New Zealand, Canada, Belgium and Italy. And I've always found some treasuries from Ireland, Finland, Holland, Mexico, Colombia, Indonesia, Philippines, Iran, Pakistan, Norway, Chile and India. Another interesting piece that you can find in this book is a 78 picture disc. Did you know that RCA produces that?

If you're a 78's collector or just a fan who enjoy seeing nice stuff from all over the world don't miss this book. You can order Elvis Presley's 78's around the world from Elvis Unlimited for 249,- Dkk.

Elvis Presley's 78's around the world

André Helling could say about himself that he has made T H E encyclopedia for Elvis' worldwide released 78 RPM records. Beside the alphabetical listing of more than 800 releases from 24 countries André also shows nearly every label variation, company- and picturesleeves as well as inserts and extras in color print. I just can tell any Elvis fan to order one copy of that self-printed discography book. It can be ordered for € 38.00 + additional shipping costs at order@elvis-on-78.de. Anyone will be really surprised about the book's information. And if there's anyone finding out that he has a record in his collection that is not listed in that book he should send a message to André to help him filling the exisiting gaps in information.

Elvis on 78

Hello dear friends and members of this club. Not much time ago I've purchased a wonderful book written by a German collector. This man has edited an unbelievable book with a discography that appeared of Elvis on 78 RPM format in the whole world. André Helling, an old friend of mine, has done a tremendous work searching for all the information available on all records pressed on this format. The truth is that I never thought that so many records were pressed in those years on 78 RPM. The author spent 7 years trying to realize this project, and the result is near of 800 - yes friends, eight hundred - records on 78 RPM from 26 countries, all listed on 24 pages with all possible information: A and B sides, companies (not every country had RCA, some of them were released under HMV and other countries had their own companies, such as Phillipines or Iran), label colors (some very particular), pressing year, and a lot of other surprises such as promo editions or even erroneous editions. Through the years this book becomes more and more complete, with a guide that shows 85 different labels and also covers that were issued in some countries (New Zealand, Japan, South Africa, Uruguay and Argentina). In a special section of the book the author is looking for information about different records that, although their existence is known, still must be found.

Final: This book is really an important discography guide for an Elvis collection of the 78 RPM record size.

If you like to know more, please visit his website where you can find all the information about the book, see rare vinyl and a lot of more things at www.elvis-on-78.de, and in any case of upcoming questions feel free to send it to chemipresley@hotmail.com. By the way, you don't have to search this kind of records in your old record cases - they were never issued in our country.

Elvis Presley's 78's around the world

by André Helling

Luxury edition with labelguide, private printed, with color pictures, text in english

Price through Collector's Service: € 38,50

This is what collectors of the good old 78 RPM records waited for very long. Now it's out - a worldwide discography of all Elvis 78 RPM's. On the cover of that book there are shown record covers from Japan, South Africa, Argentina / Uruguay and New Zealand. The listing contains information about 663 Elvis 78's. The research for the facts took nearl 6 1/2 years! The label guide contains colored prints of many Elvis 78 RPM's. For better reading of those facts this section could be printed bigger in the future. After that the alphabetical listing of the 78's issues is following. This information contains country of origin, label, number, year of issue, titles, labeldescribtion and - if necessary - additional information about the 78's.

Final: By bringing out the "Elvis Presley's 78's around the world" discography book the author André Helling really made a respectful work. A MUST for the Elvis 78 RPM collector.

Elvis Presley's 78's around the world

André Helling

This book is a 78's discography of the 78 RPM records made of Elvis. It shows (in color) the labels of the 78's together with a listing of all issued songs. Because of it's listing sorted alphabetically by country of issue, record numbers and year of issue it's a real comprehensive work for the collector. Who knows that in 1956 Uruguay made a coupling of "Love me tender" together with "Rock 'n' Roll de Tennessee" from Los Pioneros? Just one example - we could name dozens of those out of that 20-page booklet. We're sure that this was a really time-robbing work that the author wouldn't have realized without the help of many national and international experts. He's also asking for more inforation and help regarding other releases and labels missing in his book. It seems that this book is not available through any book store as there is an ISBN number missing on it.

Final: This book will become a very important and informative discography for the true Elvis 78's collector.

Elvis Presley's 78's around the world (the reference guide to elvis' earliest recorded work around the world)

Andrè Helling, Germany

Not surprisingly, Elvis 78rpm records hold a fascination for many collectors. In this indispensable compendium for Elvisphiles, André Helling has done a masterful job of putting together information on more than 900 releases from countries as diverse as Colombia, Mexico, Britain, Japan, Uruguay, Pakistan, the Philippines, the US and New Zealand.

André provides all the information one needs about each release:
catalog number
record label
label color
date of issue
track listing
distinguishing label details

There are many rarities covered in Elvis Presley's 78's around the world. One of the rarest is a single on the SPUR label from the Philippines. It features the tracks Don't Cry No More and Oh Boy, two songs actually sung by Don Soriano but on the label the prominent name is "Elvis Presley". I also appreciated reading about and seeing rare labels like Vista Vision Records (Paralyzed), the blue Electric Voice label, white Elvis Records label and the yellow label of Empire Records. The variety of different RCA labels is also impressive. The text is complemented by many color pictures of album covers and labels, which, with their distinctive and diverse looks really grab your attention.

Elvis Presley's 78's around the world is packed with many added value features including:
Special pressings
Song index and flipside listing
Company sleeve guide
Cover guide
Label guide

The page design features good use of white space and is visually appealing.

Verdict: André Helling's self-published A4 sized compendium of Elvis 78's around the world is a much needed and valuable historical record that provides a wealth of information about its subject matter. It offers a unique insight to some of the rarest Elvis records ever. Elvis Presley's 78's around the world is an absolute "must have" for Elvis musicphiles and fans wanting to learn more about the original releases that made the King the world's greatest recording artist.

Review:
From the author:

With "Elvis Presley's 78's around the world" Discography book I want to fill a gap in information of issued records and want to give all collectors of this great record-type a chance to learn about all ever issued Elvis 78's around the world. This book contains information of more than 860 different Elvis 78's issued in 24 countries, and the number of 78's is still rising up as there are many collectors from all over the world helping with new information. But the listing of all those fantastic 78's is not the only content of "Elvis Presley's 78's around the world" Discography book. It also contains label scans of nearly 100 different labels from all over the world as well as all known Elvis Presley 78's picture sleeves, all Japanese insert sheets, a section with very special pressings that are not Elvis but got something to do with him and are pressed on 78 RPM and a section with company sleeves that were used for Elvis' 78's. All those photo (picture sleeves, labels, inserts, specials and company sleeves) sections are printed in full color on finest photo presentation paper. Together with a song-index and flip-side-listing it is a very complete work for the 78's collector. This book started back in 1995 with information about the most common 78 RPM releases from USA, Great Britain and Germany. As times passed I've added Japan, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, New Zealand, Canada, Belgium and Italy. Then I've always found some treasuries from Ireland, Finland, Holland, Mexico, Colombia, Indonesia, Philippines, Iran, Pakistan, Norway, Chile and India.
